Ronald's Story

Text size

Ronald "Ronnie" Lamar Mathis, age 73, of Jennings, Fla. passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. while on vacation with his family. Ronnie's passing was sudden and unexpected. He was blessed to have had the opportunity to see his granddaughter Blake married in a beautiful beach wedding. Ronnie was not much of one to leave the farm except to go to work or more recently to make those doctor's visits you start making when you are 73, but he was actually very excited to make the trip over to Santa Rosa Beach for the wedding and a short visit with his children and grandchildren.
Ronnie was a native and lifelong resident of Jennings, Fla. having been born right there on the farm on April 16, 1943 to the late John Franklin and Blanche Newsome Mathis. Ronnie farmed most of his life and worked for the Hamilton County Road Department operating heavy equipment for over 25 years. Any and everyone that knew Ronnie had "A Ronnie Story." He had quite a personality and loved to play practical jokes on folks, but was not much for having them played on him. He loved to spin some tales with the guys at work or at the S & S store on SR 6 where he got his morning coffee. Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, his two sisters, Ilene Downs and Betty Lou Herlovich and two brothers, James Harold Mathis and John Clayton Mathis.
Survivors include his wife whom he would have been married to for 51 years in July, Nina Wells Mathis, Jennings; one son, Ronald Lamar Mathis, II "Ron" and his wife Scarlett Norris Mathis "Shug" of Williamson, Ga.; one daughter, Frankie Mathis Bryant "Kiebe" and her husband John of Windsor, , Sc.; one sister, Carolyn Daarud of Bonney Lake, Wa.; four grandchildren, Blake, Tristen, Brock and Skylor; he had one great grandchild on the way and due in October; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorial services were held on Friday, June 24 in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper, Fla. with Rev. Gerald Smith officiating.
Harry T. Reid Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
