Ms. Phyllis Smith Roberts, age 86, of Jennings, FL. passed away on Monday, May 8, 2017 at Lake City Medical Center in Lake City, FL. following a very brief illness. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at New Hope Baptist Church near Jennings, FL. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Phyllis was the daughter of the late Melvin and Myrl Annette Scaff Smith born April 25, 1931 in Hamilton County, Florida. In 1953 she married the love of her life, Samuel "Sammy" Lewis Roberts. They made their home in Jacksonville until 1978 when they returned to her beloved Hamilton County roots. Phyllis was well known for being outspoken and while this might sound harsh to some, it was that very quality that endeared her to those that loved her the most. You could count on her opinion and that opinion was valued because you knew it was an honest assessment.
Phyllis was a Christian lady with a big heart. She was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church and dearly loved her church family. God blessed her with many gifts, one of which was her ministry of outreach. She spent many hours on the phone calling and checking on those that were shut-in or suffering from some illness or aches and pains. Phyllis loved her family and cherished every minute she got to spend with her two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sammy and her brother, Willard Smith. Survivors include her son, Douglas A. "Doug" Roberts and his wife Dolly of Jennings, FL.; her sister, Cora "Ruth" Sinclair (Robert) of Jacksonville, FL.; her sister-in-law, Mildred Smith of Jennings; her two grandchildren, Liz McCoy (Josh) of Lake Park, GA. and Weston Roberts of Jennings; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and some great great-nieces and nephews.
Harry T. Reid Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
