Lafayette Mathis McCall, age 81, of Jasper, FL. passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Haven Hospice in Lake City, FL. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Divonia Baptist Church in Jasper, FL. with Pastor Ray Shaw officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery.
Lafayette was a native and lifelong resident of Hamilton County. She was born on July 24, 1935 to the late Floyd and Nellie Bennett Mathis. She shared some good times growing up with her brothers and sisters, Charlie, Bennett, Emmett,Theaster and Waunell.
She soon met the love of her life, James H. McCall, Jr. and together they raised three children. Wanting and needing to help support the family, she worked for a number of years for the Hamilton County School Board as the high school cafeteria manager. In addition to managing the cafeteria, she was able to secure a job driving a school bus. She and her sister Waunell were hard to separate and so it was no surprise when she left her job with the school district, the two took on the roll of "the sisters" known to be the ones that cooked at the local deli, providing the community with a guaranteed good meal. When it was time to fully retire she was more than satisfied to sit back and just be "Grandma" and "MeMe."
There came a time when Lafayette decided to check out the nursing home, she went to visit and it soon became her second home. She made many friends along the way, leaving her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren nothing but good memories of a life well lived. Survivors include her two sons, James McCall (Wanda) and Mike McCall (Sandy); her daughter, Julia Cooper (Andy); one brother, Emmett Mathis (Evelyn); six grandchildren, Kylie King, Mitzee McCall, Greg McCall, Cindy Santerfeit, Melissa Freeman and Mary Ann Cox; nine great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Suwannee Valley Nursing Center, 427 NW 15th Ave, Jasper, FL. 32052 or to Haven Hospice, 6037 West U.S. Hwy 90 Lake City, FL. 32055. Harry T. Reid Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
