Doug Rooney, 68, of Jennings, Fla., passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at South Georgia Medical Center, after a short illness.
He was born June 20, 1947 in Chicago, Il., the son of the late John D. "Jack" and Eraine Hughes Rooney. Doug was a dedicated Registered Nurse for 43 years, retiring from the VA Medical Center in Lake City, Fla., and currently working at South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, Georgia. He had volunteered rescuing animals, and he and his wife, Katie, founded North Florida PAWS, a rescue and low cost spay and neuter program, in Jennings. He was also an avid scuba and cave diver.
Doug is survived by his wife of 23 years, Katie Rooney; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Diana Rooney; a grandson, Sean Rooney, all of Jennings; three sisters, Leslie Rooney, Patty Scarvelli and husband Art and Amy Rooney, all of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a nephew, Mike and a niece, Jenna.
