Beatrice's Story

Beatrice Smith Selph, age 88, of Jennings, Fla. passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Suwannee Valley Nursing Center in Jasper, Fla.
Beatrice was a native and lifelong resident of Hamilton County born on Sept. 20, 1927 to the late Charles Edward Smith and Nellie Keene Smith. She attended school in Jennings, Fla. and it was there that she met and would later marry the man of her dreams, Joel Curtis Selph, Sr. Putting behind childish things, Beatrice took up the most important task in her life which was her home and family. To reminisce about her cooking would be like taking a trip to heaven for most. Her children and grandchildren could endlessly name their favorite dishes which may or may not have resulted in marriages just to be included in the count for Sunday dinner. Beatrice also had a green thumb and enjoyed taking care of her many plants. Anyone who knew her would not discount her love for shopping and going to the hairdresser. When she was able, Beatrice and her sisters would load up and go to Valdosta to shop until they dropped. Although she did not officially hold the title, she could easily have handled duties as county commissioner because in the day before cell phones Beatrice fielded countless phone calls for Mr. Joel who actually held the post of county commissioner for many years in the Jennings area.
Like many, her life was not without sadness as she endured the tragic accident in 1972 that took the life of her beautiful daughter, Pamela Selph Staten and niece Ginger Selph. It was in those dark days that she was most thankful for the large family that surrounded her. She is now reunited with Pam, Ginger, her husband Joel Sr., brothers, Buck, Willis and Thomas Smith and sisters, Lottie Smith, Alene Willis, Ovis Deas, Dollie Selph and Winnie Hodges.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Joel Selph, Jr. and his wife Rachel, Jennings, Fla.; her daughter, Linda Selph, Jasper, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Gay Johnson (Curt), Benjamin "Benjy" Burnam (Evelyn), Jody Selph (Tina), Melissa Selph, Courtney Owens (Mark), Abby Selph and Justin Selph (Allison); eleven great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews that include Elaine Perez, Penny Henderson and Nicholas Henderson who helped the family meet her every need.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, May 11 at Burnham Christian Church.
Harry T. Reid Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
